New Delhi/Gulf of Oman — In a swift and coordinated maritime response, the Indian Navy successfully led a rescue operation on Monday after a massive fire broke out aboard an oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman, a region critical for global oil transport.

The tanker, sailing under the Panamanian flag, issued a distress signal early in the morning after an explosion in the engine room reportedly triggered a rapidly spreading fire.

SOS Alert Received, INS Kolkata Springs Into Action

The Indian Navy’s guided missile destroyer INS Kolkata, which was patrolling the region as part of its ongoing security operations, immediately responded to the SOS alert. The ship was deployed within the International Maritime Security Construct (IMSC) framework, aimed at maintaining freedom of navigation and maritime safety in the region.

Naval sources confirmed that INS Kolkata reached the location within hours, coordinated firefighting efforts, and began rescue operations with speed and precision.

“Our primary goal was to save lives and prevent the fire from reaching the cargo hold, which could have led to a catastrophic environmental and security situation,” said a senior Navy officer, speaking from the ship.

All Crew Rescued; Some Suffer Minor Injuries

All 21 crew members, including a mix of Indian and international sailors, were safely evacuated. Some suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation, and were treated onboard INS Kolkata by naval medics. None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

Strategic Waters, Global Impact

The Gulf of Oman, a narrow waterway linking the Arabian Sea to the Strait of Hormuz, is one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes. Over 20% of the world’s oil supply passes through this region.

This incident comes amid rising concerns over maritime security due to regional tensions. While the cause of the explosion remains under investigation, Indian authorities have not ruled out mechanical failure.

India's Expanding Naval Role

India’s timely intervention highlights its growing presence as a maritime security provider in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). The Indian Navy has been increasing its patrols and partnerships to ensure safe passage for global trade vessels.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the Navy for its professionalism and quick response:

“This operation is a proud moment. It reflects India’s commitment to global maritime safety and humanitarian assistance.”

 Investigation Underway

Officials have confirmed that a joint inquiry involving the vessel’s management company, maritime authorities in the Gulf, and Indian Navy investigators will take place to determine the root cause of the fire.

In the meantime, the fire has been brought under control, and the damaged tanker is being escorted to a nearby port for further inspection.

 Final Word

With rising maritime risks in critical oil routes, India’s leadership in today’s operation not only saved lives but also prevented a potential environmental disaster — reaffirming its strategic relevance in ensuring safe global shipping.
